Spring is on the way
All we have to remind us that the Year of the Pig is just around the corner are 2 packets of prawn rolls, 1 container of pineapple tarts ( we bought 2 but finished 1 of them in the first week we got back), and a packet of bak kwa.
This is usually my most favourite time of the year... if I am back in Singapore, that is. For the 4th consecutive year, I will be missing the festivities back home-- no chuckling over the "corny" chinese new year songs they play in NTUC, no pushing and shoving in Chinatown and waiting for just-past-midnight to get the best bargains, no reunion dinner with family, no cny visiting....
BUT, it is not all that bad here. Sure, the reunion dinner will just be a simple affair at home for the two of us. And our walls will remain bare, and unadorned with chun lian and other new year decorations. No family visits, but on the plus side, that also means no angpaos to give out!! Hahah.
Then there are always asian supermarkets you can visit to give you that eensy weensy bit of cny atmosphere.
To everyone back at home, this is what you are NOT missing out on:

Not very appetising-looking goodies, eh? No love letters, no kueh bangkit, no prawn rolls, no pineapple tarts, but instead we have Ingots!
The only thing that is not missing, or it wouldn't be CNY:

Mandarin oranges ( just in case anyone mistakes them for red potatoes)!!
Oh, and ignore the stupid sign that says "Super Bowl Super Sunday Saving". This weekend happens to be SuperBowl weekend, but I think it's just dumb to have that sign on the oranges.
