bought our very first box of mooncakes from dallas this afternoon. i was surprised at the variety available, considering there aren't that many chinese in the area. oh well, lucky me then !! i dun know how many boxes we are gonna eat this time around. last year, we had 3 boxes from the chinatown in manhattan.
prices here are slightly higher as to be expected, but still within reasonable limits. we both love the plain lotus paste ones instead of the egg yolk ones. My only gripe is that the mooncakes they sell in the US ( or at least those we have tried so far) dun have the lotus seeds in 'em.

read the dallas newspapers today about Hurricane Katrina. apparently, someone wanted to make some clothes donations to the evacuees at the shelter in texas, and went there only to be told that they can only donate brand-new clothes and toiletries !!??! the lady was upset becos she had picked out clothes that were still in good condition, washed and cleaned, and she herself goes to resale clothing stores to get clothes for herself, so why couldn't the evacuees make do with second-hand stuff? beats me.
anyway, there was also an article about how some nursing home in New Orleans was not evacuated for the hurricane. instead, the people in charge of the home had just put up wheelchairs and nailed wood to the windows and remained indoors. Stupid is what i'd describe those people. now that the floodwaters are slowly ebbing away, authorities are discovering bodies inside the building. all i can say to that is : Poor old folks.
